Luno handles crypto sends differently due to Travel Rule compliance (international anti-money laundering standards). When sending XRP to another exchange or hosted wallet (like Xago), Luno requires additional questions about the recipient and platform — typically only once per address/provider. After the first successful send with correct details, future transfers to the same address are smoother and may skip some prompts.
Before you start
- Ensure you have a small amount of XRP in your Luno wallet to cover the send amount + network fees (XRP fees are very low, usually <0.0001 XRP).
- Have your target wallet’s XRP address and Destination Tag ready (required for hosted exchanges like Xago).
→ In Xago: Log in → Wallets → XRP row → Click Receive to view/copy address & tag. - Double-check everything — XRP transactions are irreversible. Sending without the correct tag (or to the wrong address) usually results in permanent loss.
- Travel Rule applies in your country; you’ll answer questions about whether it’s your own address or another exchange.
- Always test with a very small amount first.
Step-by-step: Sending XRP to Xago (example)
Repeat for each other exchange wallet (e.g., VALR, Kraken), updating the address/tag and selected provider.
- Log in to your Luno account (web or app).
- Go to Portfolio (or main wallet overview).
- Click SEND (or the send icon/option).
- Select Ripple (XRP) as the cryptocurrency.
- Confirm the network: Select XRP Ledger (Ripple network) — ensure it matches the receiving wallet.
- Click CONTINUE WITH SEND (or similar proceed button).
- Enter the recipient details:
- Paste the Wallet Address (your Xago XRP address, starts with ‘r’).
- Paste the XRP Tag / Destination Tag (numeric string from Xago — required for hosted wallets).
- Click Next.
- Enter the amount of XRP to send.
- Add an optional reference/memo (e.g., “Idatco transfer”) if desired.
- Click Next.
- Review the transaction summary (amount, fees, recipient address/tag).
- If prompted with a warning: Check I understand this action is irreversible and I risk losing my funds forever (or similar checkbox).
- Click CONFIRM or SEND ANYWAY.
- Travel Rule prompts (these appear for compliance; answer accurately):
- When asked about the address ownership: Click the arrow or select This is not my address (or similar).
- Then select Another exchange / Hosted by a crypto service provider (or equivalent).
- From the dropdown/search list, select Xago (Luno maintains an approved VASP list).
- Provide any additional requested details (e.g., recipient name/type if asked).
- Click Next (one or more times as prompted).
- Final review: Confirm all details again.
- Click CONFIRM.
- Click GOT IT (or acknowledge any final notice).
- Authorize the transaction:
- Check your registered email for an authorization link from Luno.
- Open the email and click AUTHORISE (or similar).
- A new browser window/tab opens — click YES, SEND CRYPTO (or confirm button).
- (If 2FA/OTP is required, enter it as prompted.)
- Transaction processes: Luno submits it to the XRP Ledger. Monitor status in your Luno transaction history.
After the first send
Luno recognizes the Xago address/provider for future sends — subsequent transfers to the same address often require fewer (or no) Travel Rule questions, making Idatco-related transfers faster.
Repeat for other exchanges
Use the same process for VALR, Kraken, etc.:
- Paste that exchange’s XRP address & tag.
- Select the correct provider from the Travel Rule dropdown (e.g., VALR if listed).
- Complete authorization each time (email confirmation is per transaction for security).
Troubleshooting tips
- Travel Rule questions not appearing? It depends on your country and the recipient — if skipped, proceed normally.
- Error or pending? Check email/spam for authorization; ensure tag is exact (no spaces).
- Funds not arriving? Verify on XRP Ledger explorer (e.g., xrpscan.com) using the transaction hash from Luno. Wrong tag = funds may be lost or require exchange recovery (not guaranteed).
- For latest interface changes, see Luno’s official guides:
Once all your exchange XRP wallets are “recognized” via initial sends from Luno, your Idatco trading flows (e.g., quick transfers between exchanges) become much more efficient and compliant.
